Guest Speaker: Dr. John Jefferson Davis Dr. John Jefferson Davis, an ordained Presbyterian minister, is Professor of Systematic Theology and Christian Ethics at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, where he has served on the faculty since 1975. A former president of the Evangelical Philosophical Society, Dr. Davis earned his Ph.D. degree in systematic theology at Duke University and is the author of several well known books, including Theology Primer (Baker); Foundations of Evangelical Theology (Baker), Evangelical Ethics: Issues Facing the Church Today (Presbyterian and Reformed), Frontiers of Science and Faith (InterVarsity Press) and numerous articles in scholarly journals. He is the recipient of the Templeton Foundation award for excellence in the teaching of science and religion, and has also received a competitive grant award from the National Institutes of Health, Human Genome Project, for the research proposal, “Ethical Concerns of American Evangelical Relative to Genetic Engineering.” He and his wife have five children, two grandchildren, and live in Hamilton, Massachusetts.
Missionaries: Charles “Bucky” & Carole Sydnor
Bucky and Carole Sydnor serve in Nepal, a country where they previously served from 1978 to1987. They are based in the Kathmandu Valley, which has the country's largest concentrations of population. Nepal is one of the world’s poorest countries in the world. Traditionally a Hindu Monarchy, full freedom of religion came to Nepal in 1990. The Nepal Baptist Church Council was established in 1994 and has grown to 115 churches and several hundred fellowships.
Handling donor relations, Bucky works as the international relations coordinator for Human Development and Community Service (HDCS), a non-governmental Christian organization based in Kathmandu. HDCS is committed to holistic mission in Nepal, and focuses on the great need for social ministries such as health, education, and community development. HDCS manages several hospitals across the country, which together serve over 10 % of the country's population. The hospitals are partially supported by various subsidies, including one from the government. He also assists HDCS with financial management. Carole also works with HDCS, helping to coordinate language and orientation of the international staff who come to work with HDCS. In addition, she teaches English and a discipleship class in a 12 week training program. Bucky and Carole relate informally with individuals and churches in the rapidly growing Nepal Baptist Church Council, in areas of discipleship and leadership development. |
